The Blogger Summer Reading Club w/ Muzzle Of Bees
Welcome to the fifth of SVB's Blogger Summer Reading Club series where we ask some of our favorite bloggers to weigh in on books - their favorite summer reads, what they're reading now and their favorite summer jams. Today's contribution comes from Ryan over at the always excellent Muzzle of Bees.SVB: What are you reading now?
MOB: I'm currently reading "Ultra Marathon Man: Confessions Of An All-Night Runner," by Dean Karnazes. Chances are you've heard stories about him, he ran 226 miles nonstop, and most people would consider the man absolutely crazy. However, the book perfectly illustrates a man whose happy doing what he does for a living, and wasn't afraid to leave the comfortable confines of a high paying office job to follow his heart and his dreams. I'm at a place in my life, after just completing my first marathon in May, where I've realized that life's too short to not follow your heart and dreams. It's too bad a book has to remind me of that, but I guess the important part is you get that message somewhere.
SVB: What book would you suggest for summer/vacation reading?
MOB: I'm probably the worst person to ask when it comes to summer reading because as all my friends can attest I'm usually absorbed in reading biographies. One thing I always look for in "summer/vacation reading" is a quick page turner that allows for you to put it down and come back hours later and still have the storyline in your head. One book that best fits that description is "Sex and Sunsets," by Tim Sandlin. I know the title sounds like some glorified romance novel or perhaps something even more risqué. The main character, Kelly, is a true obsessive and throughout the entire storyline you can't tell if he's all there or just completely sane that you begin to question your own perspective on the lengths you're willing to go through to get what you want. It's great an easy page-turner with a lot of humor along the way.
SVB: What's your favorite summer jam?
MOB: About four years ago one of my best friends who makes really great mixed CD's (and before that mix tapes) had given me a disc he made that had a the song "Dream Machine" from Mark Farina's Air Farina with an absolutely gorgeous voice over a quasi hip-hop/ambient beat. The singer turned out to be a guy from San Francisco named Sean Hayes. I've got all his albums and they have provided the soundtrack to countless summer road trips, barbecue’s, sunrise, and sunsets.
