How To Be The Billionaires

The LA by way of Martha's Vinyard band The Billionaires remind me of a hybrid of Jellyfish, Lovin' Spoonful, Phoenix and the 5th Dimension. I'm not so sure where the 5th Dimension come in - maybe from Jimmy Webb who wrote a bunch of songs for them and The Billionaires often remind me of the song "Up, Up And Away." From the first song to the last they guarantee wide-eyes and smiles. Their debut album, Really Real For Ever is coming out in March on Too Soon and these guys and girl are quite a sneaky bunch of shiny pop people. The boy-girl (Laura Jordan) harmonies are as addictive as peanut butter on raisin bread (a good thing; try it sometime). The vocal arrangements are sophisticated and layerous, the playing is AM-radio ready for FM and there is a versatility to the playing and musicality that's impressive. They can even get a little fawnky. They sing about getting high in high school, 80's movies, the end of summer and mother nature, no doubt a nod to Neil Young. All good things, right? Cuteness aside, and gleefully not trying too hard to be good, Really Real For Ever is about as smart a pop album you'll hear this year.
