SXSW Music Day 1 - I Used To Do A&R, Now I'm A Blogger

SXSW Music - Day One (Wednesday)

Here's who I saw, some music and notes.

Started the night at Emo's seeing local blues and R&B fave Black Joe Lewis who threw down an inspired and fun set of rock and R&B.
Gunpowder - Black Joe Lewis

Caught a disappointing few tunes from Zookeeper marred by bad sound but I'm hoping to catch them again as I really like their Becoming All Things album.
Snow In Berlin - Zookeeper.
I heard some good street buzz on Chester French so decided to check out their set that didn't disappoint at their set at Volume. Hard to pin down just what crazy 80's musical thing they're mining but I dug their overconfidence and the band got some strong points for some incredible playing and that big mop of curly red hair on lead singer's head. Hair matters sometimes in rock and roll.

SXSW has more than its share of great bands and also has more than its share of incredible DJ's throwing down and Car Stereo (Wars) was no exception. Check out this "song" and you'll understand clearly why Chris Rose can get the party started right.
Hey Hey Stick Stickley - Car Stereo (Wars)

The highlight of the night was the Manchester duo The Ting Tings who came to entertain the crowd at Buffalo Billiards. Lead singer/guitarist Katie White is a charisma machine and with her drummer partner Jules De Martino they whipped the crowd into a crazy frenzy. This is what SXSW is all about, my friends. I'm definitely going to catch them again before the week is out.

Today's agenda:
NPR Music at The Parish with Vampire Weekend, A.A. Bondy, Jens Lekman, Yeasayer, Shout Out Louds and Bon Iver. Also some late night rocking with My Morning Jacket, The Heavy, Brooklyn, The Wombats, the Death Set, N*E*R*D, Devotchka, Via Audio, Old 97's and if there's time Diplo and The Heavenly States.
