The Low Anthem

The first thing I thought to myself when I sat through the new album from Providence, Rhode Island's The Low Anthem was that I wanted whatever drugs they were taking for their musical schizophrenia. One moment angelic, haunting, languid and dignified, the next moment all Tom Waits-esque stomping and hollering, there's a singular vision at work here with touchstones such as Simon & Garfunkel, Red House Painters, Dylan's Highway 61, Aaron Copland, Grant Lee Buffalo, The Band, and a night ride home in Joni Mitchell's car. The band has primarily been a trio and includes Ben Knox Miller, Jeff Prystowsky and Jocie Adams. They are currently on tour opening for Rachael Yamagata.

The band's new album is Oh My God, Charlie Darwin. If there's a new definition of Americana, The Low Anthem have created it. And along with bands like Fleet Foxes, Blitzen Trapper & the softer side of MMJ, The Low Anthem are making something soft, strange & beautiful. Buy two copies of this record; one for yourself and give one to someone who really loves music.
